Woodbridge is a large suburban community in the City of Vaughan, just north of Toronto, Ontario. It was once
an independent town before being amalgamated with nearby communities to form the city in 1971.
Like many early Ontario communities, Woodbridge developed around a waterway. The Humber River provided a ready-made
transportation system and the power source necessary for economic growth. The village consequently became the commercial centre
of an excellent farming area.

Asian Long-Horned Beetle
| Although the Asian long-horned
beetle is not an insect that York Pest Control deals with, it is an insect
that thrives in York Region and is a danger to our trees. The following
information has been gathered to assist residents of York Region in identifying
the Asian long-horned beetle and report it if necessary to the appropriate
authorities. The following also includes some background on this pest. |
| The Asian long-horned beetle (Anoplophora
glabripennis) is a forest pest native to several Asian countries. This
destructive insect attacks and kills a wide range of hardwood trees, including
maple. Also known as the starry sky beetle, this wood boring insect
was found in an industrial park bordering Toronto and the City of Vaughan, in which Woodbridge resides,
in 2003.
Mature Asian longhorned beetles are very large insects with bodies ranging from 1 to 1 1/2 inches (2.5-4 cm) in length and
antennae which can be as long as four inches (10 cm). They are shiny and black with white spots and long antennae
banded black and white. These beetles have wings and can fly, although only for short distances because of their size
and weight. |

In February 2004, the federal Minister
of Agriculture and Agri-food, Andrew Mitchell, issued a Ministerial Order under the Plant Protection
Act to prevent the spread of the Asian long-horned Beetle
within Canada.
This order declared that the movement of firewood, trees, leaves, nursery stock, logs, lumber, wood chips and bark
chips from certain tree species is prohibited or restricted within the Regulated Area. In Vaughan, this is the area
borderd by Steeles Ave. (northern border); Hwy 27 (western border); Rutherford Road (southern border) & Dufferin St.(eastern
border). The Asian long-horned beetle is a threat to all of Canada's hardwood forests and a serious
threat to the forests of Ontario.

The majority of broadleaf trees in Canada are at risk from
the Asian long-horned beetle. This includes all species of maple found
in Canada. The Asian long-horned beetle does not attack conifers.
