Below is a table showing the most common household insect pests in York Region and surrounding area. Each insect is
accompanied by an image of the insect as well as a brief description of the habitat it is most frequently found in.
Each image links to another page that expands on the different types, physical make up and the habits of the insect as well as the most
effective method of controlling it.

| Ants |
|
Two of the most common, potential
nests sites for ants are window sills and door frames. The main nest is often found outside
with secondary nest(s) inside your home.

| Bed Bugs |
|
Bedbugs reside near
humans.
They dwell in cracks and crevices of bed frames, mattresses and box springs
where the fabric is folded over. They can also be found in dressers
and behind baseboards
|
| Bees |
|
Bees generally build
their nests (called hives) in low areas, in the ground or amid debris.
|
| Beetles |
|
There are several sorts of beetle that commonly infest homes in York Region. Each species prefers a different habitat.

| Centipedes |
|
Centepedes can be found in areas of high moisture, especially under loose bark, around piles of leaves, grass
or mulch
|
| Cluster Flies |
|
Cluster Flies spend the winter dormant in attics and wall spaces. Once the temperature begins to rise again, they can be spotted inside, usually around sun-warmed windows.

| Cockroaches |
|
Cockroaches prefer to
live in dark, tight, moist areas.
|
| Earwigs |
|
Earwigs are most active
at night and generally hide during the day. They prefer to live in moist,
shady places
|
| Fleas |
|
Fleas are generally
found in areas where host animals frequent.
|
| Millipedes |
|
Millipedes generally prefer areas of high moisture around exterior of buildings.
|
| Other Insects |
|
Insects and arachnid infestations can make the living conditions in your home
unpleasant, and can damage property and pose health risks to your family and pets.
|
| Parasites |
|
Parasitic Insects dwell in areas of the home where warm blooded mammals (humans and pets) reside. The most
common of these pests are fleas and bedbugs.

| Silverfish |
|
Silverfish live in areas of high heat and humidity, such as bathrooms and waterbeds, and nest in tight cracks and crevices.
|
| Spiders |
|
Spiders dwell in many different areas both around in inside the home.
|
| Wasps |
|
There are three types of wasp that are common to the York Region Area. They have very different nesting habits,
but all three can infest your home, yard, or outbuildings and pose a hazard for residents and pets.
